I spent the 4th of July largely at home.
Not by choice — by horses.
If you’ve never managed a 1,200-pound animal through an afternoon of neighborhood fireworks, it’s an education in patience, presence, and the genuine unpredictability of things you can’t control. You do what you can, you stay close, and you trust that it passes.
It always does.
Between trips to the barn and back, I had more time to sit and think than I usually allow myself. And with this being the 250th birthday of this country, freedom was on my mind — in all its dimensions.
What Freedom Actually Requires
I am genuinely grateful to live in a country where I can vote, speak my mind, practice my faith openly, and build a business from a conversation I had with a client during maternity leave 25 years ago.
None of those freedoms are automatic. They exist because someone before me decided they were worth having — worth fighting for, worth protecting, worth exercising consistently rather than occasionally.
The vote only matters if you cast it.
The business only exists because someone decided to start it.
The freedom to build something on your own terms only produces something if you actually build.
This country rewards the people who show up. The innovators. The ones willing to jump in and solve a problem before they know for certain it will work. The ones who start a course during maternity leave because a client asked a good question and the answer seemed worth sharing.
That’s how SalezWorks started. Not with a business plan or a grand vision. With a client who wanted to know how other professionals built their books through referrals — and a decision to find out and teach it.
Twenty-five years later I’m still teaching it.
There’s a lot to be said for sticking around.
The Opportunity in Front of You Right Now
AI has changed what’s possible in ways I couldn’t have imagined when I built that first eight-hour workshop. Three blogs a week. Complete marketing campaigns. Course rebuilds that used to take six months now taking thirty days.
The tools are extraordinary. The fundamentals haven’t changed at all.
Relationships create opportunity. They always have. They always will.
The professionals who built thriving books of business through referrals didn’t do it because the economy cooperated or the market was easy or the timing was perfect. They did it because they decided that their own practice deserved consistent, intentional effort — and they showed up for it.
The same is true in 2025.
The same is true this week.
